Blower Door Testing

Our blower door test measures air infiltration in your home and provides an energy rating. We monitor interior spaces for air escaping or coming in to identify leakage.

We fit a frame and flexible panel into a doorway. A variable-speed fan, pressure gauge, airflow manometer and hoses measure pressure differences between indoors and outdoors and the airflow through your home.

When we find an area with air leakage during testing, we seal it. After the test, we return to replace, repair or fill gaps using current products and technology.

Proper sealing can reduce energy consumption caused by air leakage, help avoid moisture-condensation problems and reduce uncomfortable drafts from cold outdoor air. These benefits apply to older and newer homes.

Before our technician arrives, extinguish all wood and coal fires completely and remove ashes from open fireplaces. Plan to walk through your home with us and point out drafty areas or rooms that are difficult to keep comfortable.

We need access to closets, built-in cabinets, attics, crawl spaces and unused rooms. Our technician closes exterior doors and windows, opens interior doors, and closes fireplace dampers, fireplace doors and woodstove air inlets.

For safety and accurate results, our technician sets the controls on atmospheric fossil-fuel appliances so they do not fire during testing. We restore those controls to their original positions after the test.
